APPGM on Political Financing open to collaborate on drafting the Political Donations Bill

Kuala Lumpur, 20 May 2022: The APPGM on Political Financing welcomes the statement from the Honourable Prime Minister yesterday regarding the government’s commitment to improving governance and integrity in efforts to combat corruption.

The agreement to table the policy stance of the political financing Bill in the Cabinet Meeting is timely considering that the uncontrolled usage of money in politics has become one of the most serious causes of corruption.

As an officially recognised entity under Parliament, the APPGM provides a platform for discussion regarding the monitoring of political donations between different stakeholders such as Members of Parliament (MPs), Senators, civil society organisations (CSOs), and other parties of interest.

“At this time, we are studying the laws that have been implemented in other countries as well as other recommendations that have been forth by other experts. Extensive research on this topic has been done since 2009 by experts who are also members of this APPGM. Thus, we are open to engage and collaborate with government to ensure this Bill can be drafted and tabled in Parliament as soon as possible. The tabling of this Bill should not be delayed further and must be expedited for the maturing of our democracy,” says YB Ahmad Fadhli Shaari, Chair of the APPGM on Political Financing.

“We are confident that this Bill presents a positive step in ensuring our democracy is protected not only from foreign influences, but from other powerful groups as well. Furthermore, this Bill is a fundamental part in Malaysia’s efforts to fight corruption at its very core,” ends YB Ahmad Fadhli.
