Position Overview:
The experienced and dynamic Research Manager works with the Senior Manager in leading research on policy reforms for democracy and governance. You will ensure the production of impactful and credible policy papers on democracy, institutional governance, and policy reforms. The role also involves capacity building, knowledge transfer, team leadership, and enhancing the professional growth of the team. This is a full-time role with opportunities to make significant contributions to policy discourse at the national, regional, and international levels.
Job Responsibilities:
- Develop, oversee, and contribute to high-quality research projects and publications on democracy, governance, and political issues in Malaysia and the region.
- Ensure research outputs meet academic and policy-relevant standards, including peer-reviewed papers, policy briefs, and other outputs.
- Work with the director/deputy director of research to provide strategic direction for reforms in democracy and governance, ensuring alignment with IDEAS’ mission and goals.
- Lead the preparation and execution of grant proposals, including coordination with other departments/units.
- Mentor and train research team to enhance their skills in policy analysis, research methodology, and report writing.
- Manage the performance, development, and well-being of the research team, providing regular feedback and professional development opportunities.
- Foster a culture of continuous learning through internal workshops, seminars, and collaboration with external experts.
- Respond to topical issues related to IDEAS publication papers and policies.
- Represent IDEAS at public events, conferences, and workshops, sharing insights on democracy, governance, and politics.
- Build and maintain relationships with policymakers, academics, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders.
- As part of IDEAS management, support the overall development of the organisation.
Academic Qualifications and Experience:
- Minimally a Master’s degree in Political Science, Public Policy, Law, Sociology, , Regional Studies (e.g., Southeast Asian Studies) or a related field. Equivalent experience in research and prior published papers can be considered.
- At least 5 years of relevant experience in research, policy analysis, or academia, preferably within a think tank, academic institution, or policy-focused organization.
- Proven track record in producing high-quality research papers, policy briefs, or academic publications.
- Demonstrated expertise in democracy, governance, and politics, particularly in the Malaysian or Southeast Asian context.
- More senior positions may also be available depending on level of experience, competency, and qualification.
Required Skills and Competencies:
- Excellent analytical, writing, and research skills, with the ability to synthesize complex information into clear insights, produce credible data analysis, and to write policy papers.
- Strong leadership and team management skills.
- Strong written and oral communication skills, including public speaking and stakeholder engagement.
- Ability to manage multiple projects, meet deadlines, and maintain attention to detail.
- Proficiency in both English and Bahasa Malaysia (written and spoken).
Additional Requirements:
- Familiarity with Malaysian political and governance systems. An understanding of comparative politics, legal systems, or public policy across countries or regions is an advantage.
- Experience in securing research grants and managing project budgets is an advantage.
