Change of guards at IDEAS, Tricia Yeoh to take charge

Tricia takes over IDEAS’ ‘wau bebas’ from Ali Salman.

Kuala Lumpur, 16 July 2020 – The Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (IDEAS) has announced that the Chief Executive Officer of IDEAS, Ali Salman will step down on 31st July 2020. IDEAS appointed Tricia Yeoh as the next CEO who will take charge beginning 1st August 2020.

Ali Salman, hailing from Pakistan, has worked at IDEAS since 2017, including the last two and a half years as CEO since he replaced Wan Saiful Wan Jan. Ali oversaw the growth of a well-established think tank which has played a leading role in national debates on governance, economic and social policies through its research while navigating through dramatic political transitions in Malaysia. “It was an enriching and rewarding professional experience to work in a prominent independent think tank of Malaysia during these turbulent times and indeed an honour to develop and lead a great team,” said Ali Salman.

“Ali has done a tremendous job growing IDEAS during an exciting period of public policy in Malaysia, ensuring our contributions to policymaking debates while keeping true to our principles. I wish him all the best as he leaves us,” said IDEAS Chairman, Tunku Zain Al-‘Abidin.

He continued, “And I’m pleased to welcome our former COO Tricia fully back into the IDEAS family after her study break. The Board looks forward to working with her in pursuing liberty and justice for all Malaysians as envisaged by Tunku Abdul Rahman.”

Incoming CEO of IDEAS, Tricia Yeoh has served the think tank as Chief Operating Officer from 2013 to 2017 and was on a three-year study break to pursue her PhD on federal-state relations. She has authored and edited several books, including “States of Reform: Governing Selangor & Penang” and is director of the award-winning documentary “The Rights of the Dead”. She was also a recipient of the Monash University Distinguished Alumni Award 2017. She holds a Meritorious Service Award (Pingat Jasa Kebaktian), awarded by the Sultan of Selangor.

“I would like to thank the Board for trusting me with the mandate of carrying forward the important work of IDEAS. I consider it a great honour and look forward to working closely with our partners, supporters and colleagues in the often challenging but rewarding task of advocating for democratic, economic and social reforms in Malaysia through evidence-based public policy research”, said Tricia Yeoh.

The Board and the team at IDEAS would like to thank Ali Salman for his dedication and wishes him all the best for his future endeavours. They would also like to congratulate Tricia Yeoh on her appointment as CEO.
