Ali is CEO of Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (IDEAS) Malaysia and CEO of Islam and Liberty Network, a global platform for researchers and academics. An economist, public policy expert and a think tank professional, he has worked in the government, private businesses, NGOs, and universities.
Laurence is Director at IDEAS, working closely with the CEO to manage the research programme and overseeing relations with government and industry. Laurence previously worked for the British government, where he specialised in economic and foreign policy and worked as an adviser to the British Prime Minister.
Sanne Jansen is responsible for all fundraising activities for our charitable arms; Ideas Academy – a learning centre for disadvantaged children in Pudu, and IDEAS Autism Centre – a centre for early intervention and care for autistic children from low-income families (B40 group) in Rawang.
Arafat is the Director of Partnership Development at IDEAS. He has previously served the Iskandar Regional Development Authority as the Special Officer to the Chief Minister of Johor, and Sime Darby Berhad as the Special Office to the Chairman. More recently he was the Head of Strategy and Product Development at Avillion Berhad.
Arafat graduated from the University of Essex with a BA in Economics and Politics, and the London School of Economics and Political Science with a MSc in Politics and Communications. He has served as the Chairman of the United Kingdom and Eire Council for Malaysian Students and member of the National Youth Consultative Council.
Wan Ya Shin
Wan Ya Shin is a Manager under the Research and Publications Division at IDEAS. Her research interests include social policy, education policy, social protection, poverty and inequality.
She was a Young Professional Fellow with the International Centre for Human Development in India, focusing on social protection in Malaysia. Prior to that, she was working with United Nations Development Programme on the Malaysia Human Development Report 2013.
Lau Zheng Zhou
Lau Zheng Zhou is Research Manager in Economics and Business at the Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (IDEAS). His research interests include financial development, global value chains, and China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
Prior to this, Lau was Senior Director at ASLI’s Centre for Public Policy Studies where he headed the research and consulting team. He was also appointed as Special Officer to the Minister of Transport Malaysia and Perdana Fellow to the Minister of Youth and Sports Malaysia.
Lau obtained a First Class Honours in Business Economics from the University of Nottingham and a Master’s degree in Political Science and Political Economy from the London School of Economics.
Aira Azhari manages IDEAS’ Democracy and Governance Unit, where she oversees research and advocacy on the topics of accountable governance, anti-corruption and creating a more policy-oriented political culture in Malaysia. She provides political analysis for IDEAS and various audiences including diplomats, MNCs, the media, the corporate sector as well as civil society organisations. Aira has been interviewed by the BBC (World News and Radio), Astro Awani, Bernama, Channel News Asia, Radio Televisyen Malaysia, Lite FM and BFM on matters relating to Malaysian politics, economics and governance. Aira graduated with a Master of Laws in Public International Law from the London School of Economics and Political Science and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Liverpool, United Kingdom.
Amir Ridzuan Jamaludin

Amir Ridzuan Jamaludin is Assistant Manager under the External Relations division at IDEAS. A radical decentralist at heart he believes that each group, be it cultural, political or religious should be given the space to experiment with their ideals.
Assistant Manager, Finance
Ahmad Bashier is the assistant manager of finance and accounts under the Operations division at IDEAS. Bashier graduated with a Bachelors degree in Accountancy (Honours) from University of Malaya (UM). Before joining IDEAS he worked as an Audit Associate at Khairuddin, Hasyudeen & Razi (KHR). A conservative libertarian, Bashier believes that nothing is impossible in this world.

Adli Amirullah is a senior economist at the Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (IDEAS). He holds a Bachelor of Economics (Honours) from International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) and a Master of Research (MRes) in Economics specialising in public economics and policy modeling from University Malaya. He was awarded the Royal Education Award (Anugerah Pelajaran DiRaja) for his achievements during his undergraduate study, and he was the recipient of the King’s Scholarship (Biasiswa Yang di-Pertuan Agong) for his postgraduate study. He has authored more than 10 independent studies on a wide range of topics including aviation, taxation, trade, business regulation, and intellectual property.
Vaisnavi Mogan Rao

Vaisnavi received her BSc in Psychology with Neuroscience from the University of Reading UK. Her research interests lie in the field of social policy, specifically in healthcare policies. Her interest in policy research stems from the desire to improve the mental healthcare system in Malaysia and other low and middle income countries. She is currently also a research consultant for Sangath, a mental health research NGO in India.

Azam Wan Hashim
Azam is an Executive in the Research and Publications division. He received his B.A. from the University of British Columbia with a specialization in Economics, Political Science and Asian Studies. Azam’s passion for policy reform is rooted in his desire to improve public welfare in the most efficient and equitable manner.
Faiz Zaidi is a Researcher under the Democracy and Governance Unit at IDEAS. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Politics and Government from the University of Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) and a Master of Social Science (Strategy and Diplomacy) from the National University of Malaysia (UKM). Faiz was previously an intern under the External Relations Division at IDEAS where he assisted in project and event coordination. He is very passionate in bringing the change for the betterment of Malaysia, particularly through the access to quality education, policy reform and free social movements.
Nur Zulaikha Azmi
Zulaikha is a Research Executive in the Economics and Business Unit at IDEAS. She is a JPA scholar and obtained a First Class Honours in Economics and International Economics from the University of Nottingham Malaysia. She strongly believes that everyone has a role in making the world a better place.
Ewanina Effandie is a Research Executive in Social and Policy unit at IDEAS. She received her Bachelor of Arts with Honours in International Relations and Politics from the University of Sheffield. Her research interests include human rights, education inequity and development economics. She is also passionate about advocating for transparency and accountability within the government.
Muhamad Zuhdi Farhan Suhaimi

Zuhdi Farhan is an Executive under the External Relations division at IDEAS. An International Islamic University Malaysia graduate, he holds a Bachelor in Human Sciences (History and Civilization) while also took minor in Usuluddin and Comparative Religion. Previously, he worked at Islamic Relief Malaysia with responsibilities in fundraising and outreach. His main interests are history, politics and culture while also keen on sports and travel.

Professor Dr. Edmund Terence Gomez is an IDEAS Senior Fellow under the Enterprise & Economics Unit. An internationally acclaimed author, he is Professor of Political Economy at the University of Malaya.
Professor Dr. Fatimah Kari is a Senior Fellow under the Social Policy Unit in IDEAS. She earned a Bachelor’s degree from National University of Malaysia (UKM), a Master of Economics from the University of Leicester, UK and a PhD (Economics) from Mississippi State University, United States.
Tricia Yeoh is a PhD candidate in Political Science at the School of Politics, History and International Relations at the University of Nottingham Malaysia, where she is currently lecturing at. She is currently on study leave from her position as Chief Operating Officer of IDEAS (Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs), an independent public policy think tank based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
HK holds a B.Eng (Hons) in Civil and Structural Engineering (UK), an MBA (UK), a Diploma in Corporate Treasury (UK), and a Postgrad Diploma in Islamic Studies from the International Islamic University Malaysia. He also qualified as a Chartered Accountant (England and Wales). HK is an Adjunct Professor of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Razak Faculty of Technology and Informatics.
Dr. Menon holds adjunct appointments with the Australian National University, University of Nottingham, UK and Cambodian Institute for Cooperation and Peace, and has served on the Advisory Boards of the University of Nottingham Campus in Malaysia and the Cambodia Development Resource Institute. He also serves on several editorial boards, including the Journal of Asian Economics, Asian Economic Journal, Journal of Asia-Pacific Economy, and Journal of Southeast Asian Economies, among others.
