The IDEAS Internship Programme is designed for those who want to make a difference and contribute to the development of public policy in Malaysia.

An internship at IDEAS allows you to tackle real issues in policy areas spanning the full breadth of work. As an intern, you will have the opportunity to work alongside our experienced full-time staff in helping out in the day-to-day operations at a research institute.

Interns are an integral part of the team. They take charge of tasks that support the organisation’s work and operations. We welcome dedicated, resourceful, and motivated individuals from various academic backgrounds to join our team and make an impact on building a better Malaysia.

Here you not only build your knowledge and skills in a thought-provoking think tank environment, you will also gain experiences that will be beneficial to your personal and professional growth.

We offer four types of internship programmes:


IDEAS most competitive and prestigious internship programme for graduates. Candidates must possess expertise in subject areas relevant to IDEAS work, such as economics, political science, law, business, social sciences, communications and journalism as well as business development. Junior Associates are expected to handle more complex tasks such as assisting with the completion of a research paper and leading a programme campaign.

Eligibility: University graduate with CGPA of at least 3.6

Duration: 6 to 9 months

The IDEAS Internship is an internship programme for fresh graduates and students from any academic background. Interns are expected to provide support for projects and activities of the division that they are assigned to, and will have the opportunity to be involved in policy research, event management, communications work, fundraising and so on.

Eligibility: University students from any background

Duration: 3 to 6 months

The Graphic Design Intern is responsible for providing support for the External Relations (ER) department. They will report to the designer or manager. This is a paid position for 3 months.

Their primary duties include but are not limited to:

  • Assist with collateral updates and version control
  • Assist with preparing images or artwork to coincide with social media and website posts
  • Assist with website updates via WordPress


  • Excellent computer knowledge for both Mac/Apple and PC environments
  • Must be proficient in basic design programs including Adobe Creative Suite and basic HTML/CSS code
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) and administrative skills
  • Ability to work independently and complete assigned tasks within identified time frames
  • Organized, dependable and detail-oriented
  • Team player, quick learner and efficient
  • Able to work well under pressure

The ‘Taste of IDEAS’ programme is for volunteers who are not able to commit to a minimum of 3 months, but would like to learn more about the work we do at IDEAS and are willing to do more leg work. Younger applicants such as high school leavers are encouraged to apply. A certificate of appreciation will be given out at the end of your volunteer period.

Eligibility: High School leavers, university/college students

Duration: Minimum 2 weeks

For those who are interested to work with refugees and low-income students, you can volunteer at the IDEAS Academy in Pudu.


At IDEAS you will be exposed to the basic principles underpinning free market ideas. We expect that you will further your personal development during your internship by reading articles and books, leading internal discussions, contributing ideas to existing projects and finally, present to the organisation your personal learning throughout the period.
