IDEAS congratulates YB Dr. Maszlee Malik on appointment as Education Minister
Kuala Lumpur, 19 May 2018: The Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (IDEAS) congratulates YB Dr. Maszlee Malik (MP of Simpang Renggam) on his appointment in the federal cabinet as education minister.
IDEAS’ CEO Ali Salman comments “Dr. Maszlee has vast experience in the field of education both as an educationist and author and is known for exhibiting principled stance by speaking on critical issues openly. He has provided fresh ideas for the Malaysian education system during his campaign by proposing teaching assistants in classrooms, reducing class sizes and reducing paperwork for teachers. He has also shown commitment to education issues affecting the community through his work on the Board of Governors of the IDEAS Autism Centre and other NGOs such as Teach for the Needs (TFTN) and Pusat Pendidikan Downsyndrome Orkids (ORKIDS).”
Ali Salman, who is also the CEO of Islam and Liberty Network, a global platform of researchers and academics, adds that Dr. Maszlee Malik has actively contributed in debate on Islam and policy issues by presenting an inclusive, plural and liberal interpretation of Islam.
Ali also adds that “Dr. Maszlee has also shown commitment to IDEAS in the past when he convened our Short Course on Political Economy in 2014. IDEAS has previously published papers on the topics of school choice, school autonomy and school dropouts, as well as 4 papers on autonomy in higher education. We look forward to engaging with the new Minister of Education on these issues, and hopefully influence the policy debate surrounding education in Malaysia.”
IDEAS has also congratulated YB Amin Ahmad (MP of Kangar) and YB Dr. Ong Kian Ming (MP of Bangi) on their recent victories in the 14th General Elections. YB Amin was a staff member of IDEAS in 2010-13, and YB Dr. Maszlee and YB Dr. Ong Kian Ming have both been strong supporters and advocates of IDEAS’ work.
