On 20 February 2020, Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (IDEAS) celebrated its 10th anniversary at InterContinental Hotel Kuala Lumpur. The theme “A Decade of Upholding Justice and Liberty in Malaysia” was chosen especially for the night’s celebration with our partners, supporters and friends. The event was graced by the presence of Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia, Datuk Seri Dr. Wan Azizah binti Wan Ismail as the guest of honor for the night.
In his welcoming speech, Tunku Zain ‘Al-Abidin ibni Tuanku Muhriz highlighted IDEAS’ achievements throughout the years. These include research and advocacy conducted that contributed towards the policymaking in Malaysia, special education and charity projects: IDEAS Autism Centre and IDEAS Academy, the recognition IDEAS received both locally and internationally, recognition bestowed upon IDEAS’ staff, directors, fellows and interns, and IDEAS’ contribution towards strengthening civil society in Malaysia.
IDEAS’ Founding President quoted Malaysia’s second Prime Minister, Tun Abdul Razak on the issue of federalism, discrimination and the protection of rights and privileges. He also thanked various entities that has supported and helped IDEAS over the years. Lastly, Tunku Zain ‘Al-Abidin reserved his appreciation and acknowledgement towards IDEAS’ current and former personnels before ending his speech with a note of determination to make Tunku Abdul Rahman’s vision for Malaysia a reality.
Ali Salman, IDEAS’ Chief Executive Officer, presented IDEAS 2019 Annual Report in which he gave details of IDEAS’ work throughout 2019. Important research was done on issues such as the role of GLCs, improvement of conditions for SMEs, keeping the accountability of government in check, pushing for institutional reforms, inclusive health policies, food supply security, the rights of refugees, ASEAN integration and environmental sustainability. 2019 was indeed a productive year for IDEAS.
After a decade of upholding justice and liberty in Malaysia, let us come together and strive to realise a Malaysia envisioned by our Father of Independence, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj.
