Public Lecture by Prof. Alan S. Kahan – “The Three Pillars of Liberalism: Freedom, Markets, and Morals from the Enlightenment to the Present”       18 March 2019

The Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (IDEAS) and the Asia School of Business will be hosting a lecture by Prof. Alan S. Kahan, Professor of British Civilization at the Université de Versailles/St. Quentin, near Paris, France.

He will speak about upcoming work on the history of liberalism and its three pillars freedom, markets and morals.

“Liberalism is the search for a society in which people need not be afraid. Freedom from fear is the most basic freedom. If we are afraid, we are not free. The great majority of liberal thinkers have relied on three pillars to ward off their fears and to limit the concentrated power that causes fear. These three pillars of liberal thought are freedom, markets, and morals, or, to put it another way, politics, economics, and religion/morality. My history of liberalism, “The Three Pillars of Liberalism: Freedom, Markets and Morals from the Enlightenment to the Present”, is intended to show how liberals from the Enlightenment through the early twentieth century combined politics, economics and morals into a powerful bulwark against fear, how liberalism in the second half of the twentieth century gradually lost touch with its moral roots, and how it is only by regaining touch with them that liberalism can overcome the challenges it faces in the twenty-first century.” – Prof. Alan S. Kahan
