On 20 November 2017, IDEAS hosted Member of European Parliament from the Conservative Party, Daniel Hannan MEP. Mr. Hannan spoke of the virtues of free trade, free markets and the importance of a global, open economy.
As a key member of the Leave campaign that was successful in the recent referendum, Mr. Hannan stressed on the merits of the Single Market as a free trade area, but also advocated for the need for trade in general to be based upon mutual recognition and not on harmonisation. He also warned of the democratic problems countries might encounter when entering into a political union, which runs the risk of decisions being made to favour the elite and well-connected.
Overall, Mr. Hannan was optimistic on the future of the UK post-Brexit, debunking the myths of the slump that many have predicted would happen after the referendum.
